The United Nations
General Assembly has proclaimed the year 2000 to be the International
Year for the Culture of Peace. UNESCO is responsible for coordinating
the activities of the International Year for a Culture of Peace.
A group of Nobel Peace Prize Laureates met in Paris for the celebration
of the 50th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights,
and drafted the Manifesto 2000 for a culture of Peace and Non-Violence.
Everyone is invited to sign it and be part of the one hundred million
signatures presented to the United Nations General Assembly in September
2000. To sign Manifesto 2000, simply go to: http://www.unol.org/
The six key points of the Manifest are as follows:
- Respect All Life
- Reject Violence
- Share With Others
- Listen To Understand
- Preserve The Planet
- Rediscover Solidarity
As I read and signed
the Manifesto 2000 for a culture of peace and non-violence in the world,
my thoughts went to my own work with The Art of Loving. There
have been times, of late, when facing the computer to continue writing
my book or an article has been a difficult task for me to face. Some
days, the thought of giving a lecture, workshop, or just talking to
someone about The Art of Loving makes me want to just run and hide at
the beach.
During the last several days, I had been trying to remember where I
saw or heard about the United Nations' announcement for the year 2000.
Finally, after many phone calls to no avail, my fingers went walking
on the World Wide Web. After much searching, I found, with relief, what
I was looking for: it was in the Manifesto.
Now and then, we all need a sign or an affirmation to assure us that
we are on the right course in our lives. Such was the case for me. I
needed to know that I was on the right course with my work and in my
life, in general. Today, I found that sign I had been searching for
madly over the last several days. The Manifesto 2000 brought to me the
affirmation I was seeking. The pledge of Manifesto 2000 is entitled,
"Peace Is In Our Hands." I would highly recommend that you
take the time to read and reflect on what has been written by some of
the world's finest minds.
As peace is in our hands, so, too, the art of loving is in our hands.
This thought brings me to a verse that I first read many years ago,
from Joan Gattuso's inspiring book, A Course In Love. It is as follows:
The Knowing
" The memory lies in us of how it could be in a loving relationship with one another,
how it could be holy, filled with gentleness, kissed by heaven. And
that love could be extended to everyone.
There is somewhere with in each of us a place where we remember and
we know. It may have become but a faint whisper today, but when we are
quiet, we hear it still.
Through all the madness that has been perpetrated in the name of love,
through the dysfunctional patterns and tears and fears, beneath it all
lies this ancient knowing. We are not here to do battle and create a
hell out of God's holy ground; we are here to love one another, to experience
heaven here together."
Join me from this day forth in the practice of peace and love in our
daily lives.
Five years ago Paul Mauchline launched an in depth North American phase of research into,"LEARNING TO KEEP LOVE IN YOUR LIFE."
His new dynamic workshop series, The Art of Loving , promises to help you learn the skills you need to succeed in a lasting, loving relationship.
He is the founder and director of The Art of Loving Institute based in Providenciales, Turks
& Caicos, British West Indies.
"I'm a researcher, writer, and speaker -- not an accredited counselor or therapist. The purpose of my life's work has been to get people to recognize that LOVE TAKES KNOWLEDGE & EFFORT. The purpose of my articles, soon to be released book, and workshop series is to provide a foundation of skills that will open doors to establish and enhance a more loving attitude towards oneself and others."
"THE ART OF LOVING WORKSHOP PROVIDES THE FOUNDATION FOR BUILDING A MORE PASSIONATE AND COMMITTED LOVING LIFE."
